The State of the FGC in 2018

The State of the FGC in 2018
Date Published On: June 14, 2018

After what could be described as one of the most interesting years in the Fighting Game Community (FGC), 2017 not only delivered great moments and growth, but in hindsight also laid the groundwork for what the FGC in 2018 and beyond may turn into.

Similar to any longtime passionate community or organization, a changing of the guard is an inevitable element that happens, and while the FGC is not known for taking a unanimous count of votes, the sense of change certainly was present in 2017, and the road that the FGC is on in 2018, only further confirmed that same perception. What Does It Mean to Be a Fighting Game Player?

What Does It Mean to Be a Fighting Game Player?
Date Published: 22 January, 2018

Fighting games are a home to a very specific type of video game player, and while that same home may get various visitors from time to time, it’s the players that decide to become residents that make it special.

Unlike other competitive video game landscapes, the community that makes up fighting games is somewhat wired differently when compared to communities that make up first-person shooters like Counter-Strike, MOBAs like League of Legends, or even card games like Hearthstone. Why I Love Tekken’s Lili Rochefort

Why I Love Tekken’s Lili Rochefort

Despite still being a relatively new character to the historic fighting game franchise that is Tekken, the wealthy Monegasque Emilie De Rochefort, better known as Lili, has certainly made a mark on the series since her initial introduction.

Coming across at times as the stereotypical act of a rich snob, Lili’s ways are often more so predicated on grace and poise, exemplified in both her personality and her fighting style. That contradicting mixture has perhaps labeled Lili as the most polarizing character in the series. Continue reading “Why I Love Tekken’s Lili Rochefort”

Why I Love The King of Fighters’ King

Why I Love The King of Fighters’ King
Date Published:

As perhaps the best example of how a female fighting game character is able to retain her feminine charm, yet still be known as an absolute badass, King is one classy gal who is unafraid to scrap.

King is the type of character that is cool without even trying. Her gracefulness shows both in her personality and fighting ability, as she beats her opponents with a bevy of hard hitting Muay Thai techniques, all while politely inviting them to try again upon their defeat. The Future of the Persona 4 Arena Series

The Future of the Persona 4 Arena Series
Date Published: 15 November, 2017

It has been over three years since the western release of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (P4U2)—the second title in the Persona 4 Arena series, and one which has seen little developer support post launch, aside from an update that only reached Japanese arcades in January of 2015.

That same update, while it reinvigorated the game within the Japanese arcade community, was a major factor in the demise of not only the game’s western community; who never received the update, but also played a hand in the rapid decline of high level Japanese players the game was once full of. Why I Love Street Fighters’ Adon

Why I Love Street Fighters’ Adon

Despite his brash and outspoken nature, Adon has been a character widely overlooked when it comes to his recognition in the Street Fighter universe. Frankly, Adon is not even the most popular Muay Thai fighter in the series—a title held by Sagat.

However, what separates Adon from the pack is his unwavering personality combined with a certain chip on his shoulder, as he is self-aware of his weaknesses yet, still carries on with an exuberant amount of confidence in himself. Continue reading “Why I Love Street Fighters’ Adon”

The Fighting Game Divide

The Fighting Game Divide
Date Published: September 18, 2017

Despite not having a long history to note from, the Fighting Game Community (FGC) has been a part of many interesting storylines. The latest, is how the negative reception of a singular game, sparked a positive reception to multiple games.

The use of the word community is often meant as a general term for a group of people who share some common interest in an idea, however, it is rarely the case when all of a community’s principles are in fact an accurate reflection on all of its members, which is the situation the FGC has dealt with practically since its inception. Why I Love Persona 4 Arena’s Yu Narukami

Why I Love Persona 4 Arena’s Yu Narukami
Date Published: September 4, 2017

There isn’t anything fancy about him, relatively speaking, everything about Yu Narukami points to him being a fairly generic character. He’s not a physical specimen, nor a speed demon, nor does he hold an unorthodox fighting style.

Frankly, he’s not much for even opening up his personality if not bothered to. However, what makes Narukami such an icon within the Persona universe, as well as fighting games, is his calm and collected demeanor, combined with a traditional yet effective katana based fighting style. James Chen vs r/Kappa

James Chen vs r/Kappa

Editor’s Note: The subreddit – r/Kappa is [NSFW].

Since the release of Capcom’s Street Fighter V, the fighting game community (FGC) has slowly seen a growing divide among itself. On one side, stand the “faces of the community”, or rather the players and community members who are seen on the front lines of tournaments, in front of the camera, or behind the mic.

On the opposite side, stand the casual player base, who enjoy spectating and playing fighting games, but for monetary reasons, time constraints, or other hurdles, rarely travel out to major fighting game events.

Tension has been growing within these two factions, as different opinions constantly collide, leading to a war of words on who is right, and whose opinion matters in the FGC. The latest example of this struggle happened when longtime fighting game commentator James Chen called out the online fighting game thread r/Kappa for being a negative influence in the FGC.
