The Persona 4 Arena series is one which has traditionally taken a backseat to other Arc System Works mainstay titles, predominately the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue franchises respectively. Although the series had a respectable competitive run from 2012 to 2016, it was never truly recognized by the wider circles in the FGC, and was even perceived by some as an inferior version of a fighting game title than what Arc System Works traditionally was known for developing.

However, despite being overshadowed in an era that had giants such as Ultra Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat 9, The King of Fighters XIII, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 drawing the majority of headlines in the fighting game community, on the evening of July 12th, 2013, a somewhat mysterious figure only known by the alias—Yume, delivered one of the most impressive performances on the EVO grand stage the FGC had witnessed to that point. Spinning off from its JRPG (Japanese Role-Playing Game) roots, Atlus with the collaboration of Arc System Works, combined efforts to bring forth the captivating universes of Persona 3 and Persona 4, respectively, into a fighting game arena.

Why I Love Persona 4 Arena’s Labrys

Despite not technically being a legacy character in the Persona universe, Labrys’ debut to the series is quite the memorable one. On the surface, Labrys is perhaps looked at as “Just another android in a school uniform”. However, as the main focus of the original Persona 4 Arena, Labrys proved she is no ordinary robot-girl.

Although she makes it clear she abides by many rules that include decency, respect, and of-course, righteousness. Two things are for certain when it comes to Labrys, she does not tolerate anyone who hurts her friends, and her strong character stacks up to just about anyone’s. The Future of the Persona 4 Arena Series

It has been over three years since the western release of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax (P4U2)—the second title in the Persona 4 Arena series, and one which has seen little developer support post launch, aside from an update that only reached Japanese arcades in January of 2015.

That same update, while it reinvigorated the game within the Japanese arcade community, was a major factor in the demise of not only the game’s western community; who never received the update, but also played a hand in the rapid decline of high level Japanese players the game was once full of. There isn’t anything fancy about him, relatively speaking, everything about Yu Narukami points to him being a fairly generic character. He’s not a physical specimen, nor a speed demon, nor does he hold an unorthodox fighting style.

Frankly, he’s not much for even opening up his personality if not bothered to. However, what makes Narukami such an icon within the Persona universe, as well as fighting games, is his calm and collected demeanor, combined with a traditional yet effective katana based fighting style.
