I find that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has a lot in common with the Fighting Game Community (FGC), be it the way in which the community came about, the mindset of the athlete or player, the way the audience and the fans perceive the sport or game, but the other interesting similarity is the ruleset.

Tekken is a fighting game that perhaps is most similar to real life fighting, however, it also abides by completely different terminology and ruleset in comparison to other fighting games, therefore, why not take a look at how Tekken has separated itself from the norm with regards to notations in fighting games. Often confused with the term Mix-Up, the fighting game term; Cross-Up is a term used frequently in the FGC, as it’s a tactic many fighting games, especially the traditional 2-D and anime genres utilize as a part of their offensive structure.

The term “Cross-Up” refers to a situation where it is more difficult for the players’ opponent to determine whether or not they must block left or right. What is a Mix-Up? | Fighting Games 101

Fighting games like many other genres in the video game space, use specific vocabulary and even some slang to identify certain aspects unique to the genre, and although I did cover some more popular and generic terms in Fighting Games 101 – FGC Terminology and Slang, it didn’t even scratch the surface of the FGC’s wide vocabulary.

One of the more commonly used terms in fighting games, are the two combined words, “Mix-Up”, and by definition it is known as a strategy or technique of making one’s attack difficult to predict. As with any community, be it large or small, habits and traditions are developed as the community grows and forms an identity, and the fighting game community (FGC) is no different despite being relatively new within its own right.

While they might not be used all the time, there are a few terms and phrases thrown around the FGC, that have become common vocabulary of sorts. The fighting game landscape is expanding as a result of the recent releases of game titles such as Tekken 7 and Injustice 2, consequently bringing in more novice players. As it is the case when entering any unfamiliar gaming scene, there are many things to keep in mind and the fighting game community (FGC) is no different.

Generally, fighting games are known for being intricate with many different layers of how to go about situations, match-ups, optimization, etc. However, the factor that is consistent among all fighting games is that everyone starts their journey on an equal playing field, and that is the character select screen.
