Yume: The Forgotten Best | FGC Legends

Yume: The Forgotten Best | FGC Legends
Date Published: 2 June, 2021

The Persona 4 Arena series is one which has traditionally taken a backseat to other Arc System Works mainstay titles, predominately the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue franchises respectively. Although the series had a respectable competitive run from 2012 to 2016, it was never truly recognized by the wider circles in the FGC, and was even perceived by some as an inferior version of a fighting game title than what Arc System Works traditionally was known for developing.

However, despite being overshadowed in an era that had giants such as Ultra Street Fighter IV, Mortal Kombat 9, The King of Fighters XIII, and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 drawing the majority of headlines in the fighting game community, on the evening of July 12th, 2013, a somewhat mysterious figure only known by the alias—Yume, delivered one of the most impressive performances on the EVO grand stage the FGC had witnessed to that point. Lessons Learned in the FGC

Lessons Learned in the FGC
Date Published: 6 December, 2018

What is the FGC? If I were to break it down to its simplest definition, the FGC (Fighting Game Community) would be referred to as a community who is involved in fighting games in some form or fashion. The involvement can be exemplified by playing, spectating, or even just supporting the community in any way.

However, that standard definition doesn’t do the FGC justice, as the question “What is the FGC?” doesn’t leave much room for interpretation, though by changing the question, and asking rather “Who is the FGC?” would result in many different answers depending on the individual.

Therefore, as someone who has been around fighting games for nearly two decades, but only having considered myself a part of the FGC proper for the last six years, the lessons I have learnt may not be extremely dated, but are valuable ones nonetheless.

Similar to how fighting games and the FGC treat aspects of gaming such as community, mentality, and competition slightly different than other genres in gaming, they also view popular talking points differently, especially with regards to how to it affects the FGC as a whole. The Fighting Game Divide

The Fighting Game Divide

Despite not having a long history to note from, the Fighting Game Community (FGC) has been a part of many interesting storylines. The latest, is how the negative reception of a singular game, sparked a positive reception to multiple games.

The use of the word community is often meant as a general term for a group of people who share some common interest in an idea, however, it is rarely the case when all of a community’s principles are in fact an accurate reflection on all of its members, which is the situation the FGC has dealt with practically since its inception. The Fighting Game Community (FGC) has experienced quite the change as of recent years, with 2015 perhaps having some of the most memorable moments in the competitive landscape, and 2016 elevating the exposure of fighting games primarily due to increased marketing and financial support from Sony and Capcom in regards to the release of Street Fighter V.

While we’re only at the midpoint of the year, how things play out in the second half of 2017, could very well be a tell on what the future holds for the FGC. Therefore, it would be a good time to take a closer look at the fighting games that headline the FGC in 2017, and how they impact the landscape, be it for better or for worse.
