What Happened to Character Loyalty?

What Happened to Character Loyalty?
Date Published: 5 October, 2018

The term “Main Character” refers to a fighting game character associated most often with a specific fighting game player. The main character is also thought of as the player’s best character, at least on paper.

Throughout the short, but rich history of the FGC, certain players have become almost synonymous with certain fighting game characters and be it tournament or casual setting, that tradition affected a major part of the FGC, which almost set a precedent for how matches were played. However, like anything that sees tenure, change is inevitable, and FGC traditions are not immune from it. Continue reading “What Happened to Character Loyalty?”

Why I Love Persona 4 Arena’s Labrys

Why I Love Persona 4 Arena’s Labrys
Date Published: 17 September, 2018

Despite not technically being a legacy character in the Persona universe, Labrys’ debut to the series is quite the memorable one. On the surface, Labrys is perhaps looked at as “Just another android in a school uniform”. However, as the main focus of the original Persona 4 Arena, Labrys proved she is no ordinary robot-girl.

Although she makes it clear she abides by many rules that include decency, respect, and of-course, righteousness. Two things are for certain when it comes to Labrys, she does not tolerate anyone who hurts her friends, and her strong character stacks up to just about anyone’s. Why I Love Guilty Gear’s I-No

Why I Love Guilty Gear’s I-No
Date Published: 22 July, 2017

She might not be the face of the franchise, nor is she necessarily the one that leads the way for the female fighters in the game, however, Guilty Gear’s I-No in my eyes is the embodiment of everything that the Guilty Gear franchise stands for.

With somewhat of a complicated past, and even more of a convoluted backstory, relating to I-No is not something most players find easy, though that has never been a problem for the witch-hat wearing rock star. Continue reading “Why I Love Guilty Gear’s I-No”

The Disconnect Between Smash Brothers and the FGC

The Disconnect Between Smash Brothers and the FGC
Date Published: June 27, 2018

As it pertains to the relationship between the Smash Brothers community and the fighting game community (FGC) I’m confident in saying that as of now, there is no real consensus on where the two stand considering the entire premise of the matter is subjective on the individual as well as the camp they resonate with more.

Therefore, as someone who resides in the camp that is the fighting game community, there is really only one lens I can see this issue through. However, even with that said, attempting to break down one side of an argument is better than turning a blind eye to both. Continue reading “The Disconnect Between Smash Brothers and the FGC”

The State of the FGC in 2018

The State of the FGC in 2018
Date Published On: June 14, 2018

After what could be described as one of the most interesting years in the Fighting Game Community (FGC), 2017 not only delivered great moments and growth, but in hindsight also laid the groundwork for what the FGC in 2018 and beyond may turn into.

Similar to any longtime passionate community or organization, a changing of the guard is an inevitable element that happens, and while the FGC is not known for taking a unanimous count of votes, the sense of change certainly was present in 2017, and the road that the FGC is on in 2018, only further confirmed that same perception. Tekken 7 Review

Reviewed on: PC
Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, PC

The 3-D fighting game space for generations has always been viewed as a niche sub-group within the grand scheme of the traditional fighting game model, and while many have come and gone, it was the Tekken franchise that truly managed to cement itself within the fighting game community (FGC).

Bandai Namco’s latest iteration to the long-lasting Tekken franchise—Tekken 7 is seemingly a culmination of almost everything a Tekken fan wanted and a little more. However, perhaps the most impressive feat is that Tekken 7 managed to modernize itself, whilst still keeping true to its original roots. Continue reading “Tekken 7 – Review”

What Does It Mean to Be a Fighting Game Player?

What Does It Mean to Be a Fighting Game Player?
Date Published: 22 January, 2018

Fighting games are a home to a very specific type of video game player, and while that same home may get various visitors from time to time, it’s the players that decide to become residents that make it special.

Unlike other competitive video game landscapes, the community that makes up fighting games is somewhat wired differently when compared to communities that make up first-person shooters like Counter-Strike, MOBAs like League of Legends, or even card games like Hearthstone. Why I Love Tekken’s Lili Rochefort

Why I Love Tekken’s Lili Rochefort

Despite still being a relatively new character to the historic fighting game franchise that is Tekken, the wealthy Monegasque Emilie De Rochefort, better known as Lili, has certainly made a mark on the series since her initial introduction.

Coming across at times as the stereotypical act of a rich snob, Lili’s ways are often more so predicated on grace and poise, exemplified in both her personality and her fighting style. That contradicting mixture has perhaps labeled Lili as the most polarizing character in the series. Continue reading “Why I Love Tekken’s Lili Rochefort”

As we near the end of 2017, it is without a doubt that we know the current state of Capcom’s Street Fighter V. The latest iteration of the beloved fighting game franchise had a rocky launch, and seemingly has failed to shake off the cobwebs ever since.

However, despite making multiple mistakes with regards to communication with its dedicated audience, bizarre consumer content decisions, and countless of PR mishaps, Capcom is potentially facing a crucial turning point that could change both the current culture of the Fighting Game Community (FGC), as well as set a precedent for the future.
